Alexa sat for a moment, drumming her fingers on

the dashboard. "We've got to get that negative

before Sammie does."

"Don't you want to call Stephen and ask him

about the picture he stole from me?"

"Yeah. But let me call him from your house. The

fixst priority is to stop Sammie."

"Do you think she murdered Lisa?" Herb asked.

"I don't think Lisa was murdered. I think her

coke habit simply caught up with her. But I do

think Sammie is trying to use Lisa's accident to get

me in trouble."

"Why?"

"I don't know," Alexa said. "I hardly know

Sammie. Maybe you can tell me why. But do it

while we're driving. Let's go!"

Herb drove back to his house as fast as his

Mustang would allow. He didn't offer Alexa any

theories as to why Sammie was plotting to put her

in jail. He had never known Sammie to do anything

hurtful, except bad-mouth the cheerleaders.

Herb was relieved to see that no one was waiting

outside his house. He had half expected to find

Sammie, Theo, and Stephen all at war on his front

lawn. He felt self-conscious as he parked and

walked up to the front door with Alexa by his

side. His house was small compared to Alexa's,

and he hated Alexa to know just how broke they

were.

His mom was waiting up in the living room,
